ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF. – Following the UK's announcement to expel 23 Russians after the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, GOP candidate Paul Martin will leave the campaign trail today to attend the "Putin Conference," a one-day event in New York's Hell's Kitchen hosted by the Human Rights Foundation, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization led by Garry Kasparov.
"To take a trip across the country to meet with Kremlin experts and rights heroes like Bill Browder, during this busy and hotly contested campaign, might seem imprudent — but our phones are ringing daily. Voters are concerned. They want the facts about Putin."
Martin went on, "They hear constant headlines about Rohrabacher — his meeting with Julian Assange, his lobbying Congress to have the Magnitsky Act overturned, about Moscow's announcement of a new ballistic missile that could destroy an amount of land 'the size of Texas,' about the fundraiser at the home of Eric Prince — now they are reading about yet another insidious murder attempt on British soil."
"At what point and under what circumstances will Rohrabacher finally push back against Putin? What will it take? His constituents want to know what the hell is going on."
Rohrabacher told ABC News during an interview in December, "I'm not Putin's best friend. I'm a patriotic American who knows that it would be really good for America to cooperate with Russia."
"Cooperate? For what reason would a nation or its allies ever 'cooperate' with a hostile adversary? People here are concerned enough with Russia's past and current meddling in our elections — which Dana along with President Trump has called a 'hoax' — but I'm informing them of these human rights abuses, and they are starting to get angry."
Martin, a self-described "raging centrist," is a lifelong Republican, businessman, social entrepreneur, and writer. An OC native, he attended UCLA and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in philosophical ethics; he has a long track record in the district of not just launching successful startups, but in being a leader for social change in the community.
He is competing in a hotly contested race in a field of 8 Democrats in California’s “jungle” top-two primary.
