ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF. –Human rights and pro-democracy crusader Bill Browder has endorsed Paul Martin, GOP challenger to beleaguered Congressman Dana Rohrabacher in California’s 48th congressional district. Martin is running a focused “anti-Putin” campaign based on Rohrabacher’s well-known allegiance to the Russian dictator.
In a prepared statement, Browder wrote, "Putin has found a backdoor way into American politics through Dana Rohrabacher. Orange County is now one of the key flashpoints in the global proxy war between Putin and the West. Paul Martin sees this and I wish him Godspeed in his quest to stop Putin and Dana Rohrabacher from compromising the integrity of American democracy.”
Browder was the chief architect of the Magnitsky Act, a bill that sanctioned 19 Russian oligarchs for complicity in the 2009 torture and death of Russian tax attorney and friend, Sergei Magnisky. After uncovering a $230 million government tax fraud, Magnitsky was arrested by the same officers he implicated.
“I’m honored to have Bill’s endorsement. This is a man who put his remarkably successful business, Hermitage Capital, on hold so he could avenge heinous human rights violations and fight for liberty around the world."
Martin went on, “Last year I read more about Bill’s crusade for justice. And I learned about how another hero, Senator John McCain, was instrumental in the passing of Magnitsky. At the same time, America learned of the extent of Russia’s unrelenting attack on our sacred democracy. I consider this race a national security issue of the highest order."
Martin attended 'PutinCon' earlier in March and met with Russian experts and victims, including Garry Kasparov. He decided to host local “Putin Events” to keep up with voters who are turning to him for answers.
"You have people like Browder and Kasparov literally putting their lives on the line in their fight for human rights and liberty, and at the same time, you have a U.S. ‘representative’ hanging out with people like Julian Assange and working to reverse Magnitsky so he can benefit his Russian buddies. Voters here can't believe it.”
Martin is skeptical of Rohrabacher's responses to increasing scrutiny: “Every few months he rattles off some desperate and tired alibi. I’ve heard them all — it’s the media’s fault, America should 'cooperate' with Russia, he’s an ‘open book.’ Look, Mueller is looking at him, as have his own GOP colleagues in Congress. If he’s such an 'open book' he won’t ignore my requests for a debate in front of voters."
Martin contends that Rohrabacher is at very best distracted with the investigations and not serving the interests of his constituents. At worst, he believes he could be conspiring to aid our greatest foreign adversary.
A self-described "raging centrist," Martin is a lifelong Republican, businessman, social entrepreneur, and writer. He attended UCLA and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in philosophical ethics and has a long track record advocating for social change in the community. He is competing in a hotly contested race with a large field of Democrats in California’s “jungle” top-two primary.
